How did you spent your Memorial Day weekend
How did you spent your Memorial Day weekend?
This was a question that I asked myself when I came to the point of wondering just what did I do. I seem to do this a lot. Have you ever gotten through a day, a week, or a weekend and then wondered what it was that you accomplished at the end? I have to remind myself that in the end I did accomplish something.
This weekend, well starting on Thursday really, I biked close to 20 miles just to hand out fliers for Sidney’s Friday River Fest. It was a statement that I tried to make for the Go Local aspect. “See we are so local that you can bike to the event!”
Of course I didn’t just go… On the way there and back I cleaned up the sides of the road. Picking up cans and bottles that people have thrown out there car windows. By the time I had finished my trip, I made $6.25, not a lot in cash but you figure thats 125 cans and bottles that are no longer polluting the sides of the roads. And then yesterday I went out again for a short ride with a friend and picked up another 20 or so.
For every one can I grabbed to turn in, there was another 3 to 5 in the ditches that were water, ice tea, or other non-redeemable type of container. I won’t get into the rest of the garbage that I see in between. And thats just around my little community of 4500. Shows you just how filthy some people can be.
I cold go on forever about trash and pollution, But I’m getting off track.
Back to the topic at hand, I’ve spent each morning working on programming for my site LughnassadhBooks.com Non-Fiction shop. This means that the shop has been off line for a week now, and every day I potentially loose money. But its not like I was moving large quantity’s of books out of the non-fiction shop to begin with. When its done maintenance, updating, and sales will be easier for all persons involved, so I don’t mind so much. It will also stop much of the spam that I’ve been dealing with..
Friday, morning before I started work, I went yard saleing. That is I went in search of stock. We’re now 3 years out from the hundred year flood that we had to deal with back in 2006, and now there are beginning to be people who have various items built up enough to have those yard sales. I did this Saturday morning too. And I used the opportunity to talk up the Friday River Fest with the home owners. Word of mouth advertising, my favorite kind.
For both Friday and Saturday, after a few hours of working, when I started beating my head on the keyboard and before I broke it, I took the afternoons to go outside and work in my garden. It’s gotten so big now that I can’t fit it all in one photo any more. Remember how I was saying that I used the funds I got from the can’s and bottles to pay for the garden? Well I finished planting it this weekend.
Some of the early plantings have started up. And then there was the plants that I started in my little hot-box, made from scrap. So that I only had to go and buy half of what I thought I would need for plants. And now all, well almost all, of them are planted in the garden.
Just for the record, and so that I can remember what it was that I planted.
Down the side of the drive
30 foot row of sugar and butter sweet corn
30 foot row of sweet peas backing the corn
in between is 14 butternut squash (talk about packing the plants in. they are in a 30 x 1 foot area.)
Up front in 12 foot rows
Onions, backed by a partial row of carrots
leaf lettuce
spinach
garlic
tomatoes (scattered in between plants are radishes)
(the end plants of each row are jalapeƱo peppers)
cherry tomatoes
(the end plants of the rows are green sweet peppers)
4 yellow squash backed by 4 zucchini squash
2 cantaloupe, 2 cucumber, and 4 sugar baby watermelon
Down the back 40 feet in 6 foot rows
9 rows of eastern potatoes (5 per row)
scallions (aka green onions)
carrots
4 rows of cauliflower (4 per row)
2 rows of carrots
butternut squash (4 plants in the last row)
Down the center 30 feet in 6 foot rows
radishes
5 rows of russet potatoes (5 per row)
3 rows of green bush beans
1/2 row of beets backed by 1/2 row of radishes
2 rows swiss chard
row of scallions
2 rows of carrots
Along the edge of the yard
3 grape vines (last year they provided enough for 4 gal. of grape juice, I hope for more this year.)
Other things I did: trimmed up the grape vines, planted a fourth. Mowed the lawn. helped to repair and upgrade 3 computers, stripped 2 others for parts. Some normal everyday chores like wash and answer email. Set up signs for the next Friday River Fest. Etc. What I’ll do for the rest of today, I have no clue. perhaps I’ll just take the day off….
The one thing that I did not do is go and see a Memorial Day Parade.
So what did you do for the Memorial Day Weekend?

I worked, when I wasn’t at the Regotta. (I spelled that wrong)
