From the garden
That is what we all wait for when we have a backyard garden. Today I was able to get a quick photo of what I harvested before everyone dived face first into the fresh veggies. Now this wasn’t the first harvest I’ve made, its just the one that lasted long enough for a photo. We’ve been eating squash, zucchini, radishes and greens for a couple of weeks now. Every few days we have a salid or something cooked out of the garden for dinner.
As you can see there is not a lot to any one harvesting, about 2 servings or so for each. Swish Chard and Spinach mixed (cooked and buttered), Greenbeans and Peas.
I was in the suppermarket and quickly looked at the price of each there. For what I got out of the garden I would have spent almost $3 each for the squash and zucchini, the peas podded were $1.79 a pound, the spinach and Swiss chard — well the spinach was $2.79 for a bag and there was no chard on the rack at all. So Am I saving money here, you bet!
But there is also the satifaction of knowing that you grew them and you know what kinds of things were done to the plants before you eat them. And that I think is worth more than the money saved.
Then again the old saying of “A penney saved is a penney earned” is still true.
